Huntsville Firefighters to Receive Grant for Fitness Program

May 23, 2012 – J. Smith Lanier & Co. is teaming up with Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company to donate $6,488 to the Huntsville Fire & Rescue, Station #2 to purchase new fitness equipment. This grant will fund two elliptical cross-trainers, free weights, and mats which are critical to keeping firefighters in top shape for responding to emergencies as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Every year across the country, heart attacks and strokes are responsible for killing approximately 50 percent of firefighters who die while on-duty. Although fitness is critical to firefighters’ ability to do their jobs, many fire departments struggle to purchase even basic firefighting tools, not to mention creating and maintaining a fitness program.

Studies have shown that a regular fitness regime can have a dramatic impact on firefighter wellness, with up to 71 percent fewer work-related injuries, a 43 percent reduction in sick leave, and a 25 to 45 percent reduction in sprain/strain injuries.

“A firefighter’s job is very strenuous and we’re committed to helping them maintain healthy lives and staying physically fit throughout their careers,” said Fire Chief Michael Sublett.

Huntsville Fire & Rescue officials, firefighters, and executives and employees from J. Smith Lanier & Co. and Fireman’s Fund will come together for a special public event where the grant package will be presented:
