Jim Williams Inaugurated as AIIA’s 108th President

- AIIA is proud to announce the installation of James A.Williams, CIC, as our 108th President. Jim Williams, CIC, of J. Smith Lanier & Company in Huntsville, was sworn in as the new President of the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents, Inc., during the 108th annual convention held last week in Sandestin, Fla.

Williams served on AIIA’s executive committee as secretary/treasurer and most recently, as president elect. During this time, he successfully raised more than $15,000 for the national InsurPAC, breaking both a state goal and personal goal. Prior to winning the executive committee nomination in 2002, he served on the AIIA Board of Directors and numerous committees such as Member Services and the Finance Committee. He also served as president of the local Huntsville Independent Insurance Agents Association.

Williams has been writing commercial insurance and managing an insurance agency since 1973. A highly motivated self-starter, Williams’ career began when he opened the James A. Williams Insurance Agency in Huntsville with only one company to represent and no clients. After ten years, the agency merged with two other agencies to form Valley Insurance Planning (VIP); he was the sole owner since 1992. During this time, he earned the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) designation. When VIP merged with J. Smith Lanier & Company in July 2000, Williams became the Managing Director of one of the south’s oldest and largest brokerage firms.

“Will You Accept the Challenge?” is Williams’ chosen theme for this year. He plans to challenge agents and company members to become more active in their association, either through involvement in AIIA committees, attendance at conferences or other sponsored events. Williams is challenging members to open their hearts and checkbooks in support of the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents through the state or national political action committees, Big I PAC and InsurPAC, and to support the fund-raising campaign for the Associations’ new home that is being built this year.

Of these goals, Williams says, “I’d like to get more people actively involved, and for those inactive people, I would like to challenge them to see what it means to be a part of AIIA.”

Each time Williams extends a challenge to the membership, he has been successful. For example, he recently raised more than $60,000 for the new facility in less than one week. He chose to increase our building’s fund-raising goal from $750,000 to $1,000,000. Building construction has not even begun, and AIIA is already close to the $700,000 mark. Looks like another goal set by Jim will be exceeded. We are proud to have Jim Williams leading this movement to increase member understanding, participation and support.

Williams and wife Peggy have been residents of Huntsville for the last 59 years and are members of Whitesburg Baptist Church where he serves as Director of Visitor Placement.

AIIA lends legislative, regulatory and market assistance to independent agents across Alabama. All of our actions positively impact the independent agency system, whether member or not, whether active participant or not. The challenge is to strengthen what the AIIA can do with increased participation and support. Image what we can accomplish if all members put forth a little bit of effort.

The Alabama Independent Insurance Agents, Inc., is Alabama’s oldest and largest association advocate dedicated to the property and casualty independent agency system.
