J. Smith Lanier & Co. and Wachovia Insurance Services of Columbus Sign Joint Venture Agreement |

Columbus, Georgia—J. Smith Lanier & Co. and Wachovia Insurance Services announced today a joint venture agreement with their Columbus, Ga. Offices. Both firms will begin operating in Columbus under the name J. Smith Lanier & Co. “The addition of Wachovia Insurance Services in Columbus fits perfectly with our corporate structure and will give the company an even stronger local presence and competitive advantage. We welcome the expertise and professionalism the Wachovia Insurance Service Team brings to J. Smith Lanier & Co.,” said J. Smith Lanier & Co. Chairman and CEO, D. Gaines Lanier. “J. Smith Lanier & Co. and Wachovia Insurance Services are an ideal partnership. We believe our combined firms will be viewed as an even greater resource and service for our clients,” said Robert W. Culpepper, Executive Vice President for J. Smith Lanier & Co. in Columbus. “This new entity combines the talent and resources of the two largest and most respected insurance brokers in Columbus. While it will be managed by J. Smith Lanier & Co., Wachovia will retain a significant ownership interest going forward,” said Stewart McDowell, chief executive officer of Wachovia Insurance Services. The joint venture between J. Smith Lanier & Co. and Wachovia Insurance Services will offer Columbus businesses a comprehensive menu of commercial and personal lines insurance, employee benefits, third party plan administration, surety and risk management consulting services. The joint venture was finalized May 1. The offices of J. Smith Lanier & Co. are located at 200 Brookstone Centre Parkway Suite 118 in Columbus, Georgia. About J. Smith Lanier & Co. J.
